CrackBerry Expert Review

Review: Freedom Pro Bluetooth Keyboard for BlackBerry Smartphones
Reviewed by DJ Reyes
In looking to lighten my daily load when travelling to and from university, I wanted to leave my Macbook at home and just use my BlackBerry. It was fine for a while until I had to start writing essays and pages and pages for coursework. The Torch keyboard wasn't going to cut it. Of course there was the option of using the university computers but you weren't always guaranteed to get one so I had to get myself a bluetooth. That's when I got the Freedom Pro Bluetooth Keyboard. Small and light enough to join my books and notebooks and not kill my back while doing so. In fact, most of this article was written using the keyboard with my BlackBerry Torch.

My overall thoughts on the Freedom Pro Bluetooth Keyboard are positive. It served me well for the purpose I needed if for. Basically does what it says on the box. The 12 definable shortcut keys are an awesome bonus but remembering what app is assigned to what number can take a while to get used to. If you use them often enough, of course this wouldn't matter. Due to it's full-sized keys however some may see the keyboard as a bit too big, especially compared to other Bluetooth keyboards in the market but if you're looking for a reliable keyboard that gives you the best typing experience I would recommend getting one. Definitely allows you to get a lot more done than using your BlackBerry keyboard alone.

StarStarStarStarStar Instructions are wrong for Playbook
User: Lorenza McCants, Feb 28, 2012

Pros:  Works great
Cons:  Instructions are not included for Playbook

I got this for my wife and she loves it. Once we got it working she decided that there was no turning back to using the on screen keyboard. She is a typist and the virtual keys made her nuts.

My ONLY peeve is that the instructions included in the package AND the ones on the vendor web site do not address the Playbook directly. I had to do some Internet searching to actually find out how to get it to connect to the Playbook. FYI, treat it like an iPad.
StarStarStarStarStar Great Keyboard
User: Armando Martinez, Jul 20, 2010

Pros:  Ease of connectivity
Cons:  -

If you are tired of those small phone keyboards, this one is for you. After I started using it, my friends commented on how fast I was texting and emailing. The keyboard shortcuts are great but takes a bit to get used to. Once you do, you can fly through the functions. The additional stand for your phone is a big plus. The case is elegant and Ive had lots of comments, "where did you get that!?" The keyboard responds immediately and its neat to see your typed words come out on your phone very quickly. Even though its another thing to carry around, the speed by which you can accomplish your texts and emails is worth it. Very high tech and impressive.
StarStarStarStarStar not perfect, but pretty good
User: Thomas Block, Dec 23, 2010
For whatever reason, getting the keyboard to connect to my 9800 requires that I open up their icon on my phone each time. Their tech support said this wasnt normal, but couldnt suggest any fix. Other than that, it does exactly what I wanted -- a fast way to type emails.
StarStarStarStarStar Good product, but has some Bluetooth Issues.
User: S. Sims, Jun 6, 2010
Overall, the product works great, and is easy to set up. I have a Blackberry Tour 9630 running OS 4.7, and I experienced a problem with the auto-reconnect option on the keyboard. For some reason, using the auto-reconnect option would corrupt all other Bluetooth connections on my phone, causing me to have to re-establish those connections anytime I wanted to use those other devices. It took me a lot of troubleshooting to figure out that the auto-reconnect was causing the problem. Tech support was completely apathetic, and provided NO help whatsoever. Eventually I was able to figure out the problem on my own, and the product works great as long as you manually connect and disconnect every time you want to use the keyboard, which only takes a few seconds, and is no big deal in my opinion.

Again, the product works fantastic now that I have gotten through the auto-reconnect issue, and I would definitely recommend it. I do not think it as flimsy as some other people have suggested, although I have not used it long enough to say that definitively.
StarStarStarStarStar Highly recommended accessory
User: Matt Rinaldo, Feb 1, 2010

Pros:  QUick connect, easy to use, super functional
Cons:  portability

Connection to my Blackberry Storm took about 2 minutes to download the driver and pair the bluetooth radios. I sometimes send some fairly involved emails and use the Blackberry memo pad for taking notes and the touchscreen keyboard can get a little frustrating. A full sized keyboard was my "most desired" accessory and this one works flawlessly. The text sometimes lags behind the typing a little but catches up quickly. Theyve switched the ? and shift keys on the right side from the previous model - many reviews mention this.

I used to have a folding keyboard for my palm pilot that folded accordion-style that was a little smaller than this one. This keyboard will barely fit in a pocket and is a little cumbersome to carry around, but that is my only small drawback.

I highly recommend this keyboard for any users who occasionally need a full sized keyboard.
